Domains Of Websites Exclusively For Mobile Phones
THE domain names for a mobi-site, a website built specifically for viewing on mobile phones, are selling four to six times the cost of a regular site.
A mobi- site ( mobile ready websites ) can be identified by the extension ' .mobi ', while the more common sites come with a' .com or' .net extensions. At present, a .com domain ( for example www.centrafest.com) costs about Rs 400 to Rs 500, while its .mobi counterpart (regularsite.mobi) costs Indian Rs 1,000-2,000.
Mr. B Shavmiurakhia, CEO of Directi, the 1 Oth largest registrar of domain names in the world, said that the no velty value attached to a .mobi site is the reason for the high price. ( Ref. Eco Times )
It is also because the mobile phone has emerged as the new window to the internet. Accord- ing to the GSM association, more people have access to an internet-ready mobile device than a PC with internet access. Researchers expect Ubillion people to be connected to the internet through the mobile device. The price for mobi-sites invokes a sense of deja vu.
About nine years ago a similar rush was seen for registration of .corn extensions and more recently the .in extension. In the case of .corn and .in sites, the prices came down quite quickly.
They became one- fourth the initial price in a year's time. In case of .mobi things might be a bit different. "Dotcom extension was for everyone, while .mobi is for those who have a mobile web- site ready and very few people do.
